The Content Monetization System

By James Tumbucon · @jamestbuilds

My Story

During my last year of college at the University of California, Riverside, COVID hit. Instead of finishing, I moved to Las Vegas to live in a content house where I was producing content for pages on Facebook. In my first year producing, those pages hit 2 billion views. No team. No big budget. Just understanding what made people stop, watch, and share.

while living in a content house in Las Vegas during COVID.

"I learned that virality and content wasn't just creative — it was engineered."

From there, I had something most people don't when they're starting out — proof. A TikTok page that showed I understood content. I used that to start cold outreaching to creators, onboarding them as clients, and building a creator management agency from scratch. No boss. No office. Fully remote, working for myself.

That was my first real business. And it taught me that content isn't just about views — it's the most powerful distribution system for building whatever you want next.

The personal brand you're seeing me build right now — this is me doing it again, in public, in real time. And this document is the system behind it.

The Framework

Most people fail at content because they skip steps. They try to monetize before they've built trust. They try to build trust before they know what they stand for. They post without direction and wonder why nothing works consistently.

This framework has three parts. They work in order:

Foundation

Find Your Content Identity

Before you film anything, you need to know what only you can say. Answer these five questions honestly:

  1. What have you actually been through? Your turning points, failures, pivots, and wins. The more specific, the better. Generic backstories don't build audiences — specific ones do.
  2. What do you understand that most people don't? What feels obvious to you but confuses everyone around you? That gap is your content authority. You're not teaching — you're translating.
  3. What do you genuinely believe that most people disagree with? Contrarian opinions create engagement — not for shock value, but because you've seen something others haven't.
  4. Who is one person who needs to hear what you know? Not a demographic. A real person — their specific problem, their situation, what they currently believe.
  5. What result do you want that person to have from following you? Not vague inspiration. A specific outcome. That's your content promise.

Build Your Content System

Every piece of content you post should be doing one of three jobs:

TOF — Top of Funnel

Attention

Goal: Stop the scroll. Get reach. Attract strangers.

This is your highest volume content. Reaction videos, memes, relatable takes, controversial opinions, pattern interrupts. It doesn't need to sell anything — it just needs to pull people in. Most creators skip this entirely and wonder why nobody finds them. TOF is how new people discover you every single day.

Examples: A reaction to a viral business take. A meme that nails a feeling your audience has. A hot take that makes someone stop and think "wait, that's exactly me."
MOF — Middle of Funnel

Trust

Goal: Show you know what you're talking about. Build authority.

This is where your talking head content, breakdowns, and real-life stories live. You're not selling yet — you're demonstrating. Viewers who came in from TOF content decide here whether you're worth following.

Examples: Breaking down how you actually built something. Explaining a framework. Showing behind the scenes of your real work and life.
BOF — Bottom of Funnel

Convert

Goal: Turn followers into buyers, leads, or clients.

Direct calls to action. Lead magnets. Offers. This is a small percentage of your content but it's where income is made. It only works because TOF built reach and MOF built trust. Skip either and BOF falls flat.

Examples: "DM me [word] and I'll send you [thing]." A post about your offer. A story funnel with a CTA at the end.

Choose Your Monetization Path

There is no single right way to make money from content. Here are the five main options:

Option A — Brand Deals & UGC

No audience required.

Brands pay you to create content for their ads or social channels. UGC requires zero following — just a portfolio and the ability to pitch. This is the fastest path to first dollar from content.

Option B — Low-Ticket Digital Product

Templates, guides, prompts. A $7–$97 product someone can buy instantly.

Templates, PDFs, prompt packs, mini-courses, Notion docs. Low friction to buy, scales without your time.

Option C — Physical or Dropshipped Product

Content-driven ecommerce.

Use your content audience to sell a physical product — branded or dropshipped. Works best when the product is tied directly to your content niche. Your content is the organic ad spend.

Option D — Online Service

Freelance, agency, consulting.

Social media management, content creation, paid ads, copywriting, web design, lead generation, email marketing. You don't need a huge audience — you need credibility and a clear offer. Your content is proof of your skill.

Option E — High-Ticket Offer

Coaching, program, community.

A $500–$5,000+ offer delivering a specific transformation. Highest margin, requires the most trust. Your content does the selling before anyone reaches out.

You don't have to pick just one. Most creators start with the fastest path (UGC or low-ticket), build trust through content, then layer in higher-margin offers over time.

The AI Prompt

Build Your Entire Strategy in One Session

This is the exact prompt I use to map out a complete content strategy and find the right monetization path. Copy the text below and paste it directly into ChatGPT. Takes 20–40 minutes. Do not rush it.

Copy & Paste Into ChatGPT { "role": "system", "content": "You are an elite content strategist and monetization architect. Your goal is to help the user discover what they should create content about based on their real-life experiences, strengths, and thinking patterns — then build a complete content system and identify the right monetization path for them. Guide them step-by-step through each stage. Do NOT skip stages. Push for clarity, specificity, and real insight. No generic or surface-level answers." }, { "role": "user", "content": "Interview me to discover my content identity, build my content system, and define the best way for me to monetize my audience. Follow this structure exactly: — PART ONE: CONTENT IDENTITY — Stage 1 – Life & Background: Ask about my experiences, key turning points, challenges I've overcome, and what shaped how I think. Stage 2 – Natural Strengths: Identify what comes naturally to me, what I think is obvious but others struggle with, and what people already come to me for advice on. Stage 3 – Perspective & Opinions: Ask what I strongly believe that others disagree with, what most people are doing wrong, and what frustrates me. Stage 4 – Audience Identification: Help me define who relates to me most and who would realistically follow and buy from me. Stage 5 – Content Identity: Define 2-3 core content pillars, best formats, and my natural tone. Stage 6 – Belief Gap Mapping: Identify 5 beliefs my audience currently holds vs 5 beliefs I think are true. These gaps become my strongest content angles. — PART TWO: CONTENT SYSTEM — Stage 7 – Funnel Strategy: Break my content into TOF (5 ideas), MOF (3 ideas), BOF (2 ideas). — PART THREE: MONETIZATION PATH — Stage 8 – Skill & Experience Extraction: What have I built or figured out that others would pay for? Stage 9 – Monetization Path Selection: Walk me through each option: Option A — Brand Deals & UGC: No audience required. Fastest first dollar. Option B — Low-Ticket Digital Product: $7-$97. Scales without my time. Option C — Physical or Dropshipped Product: Content as organic marketing. Option D — Online Service: Social media management, content creation, paid ads, copywriting, lead gen, email marketing, or other skills-based services. Option E — High-Ticket Offer: $500-$5,000+. High trust required, highest margin. Stage 10 – Offer & Positioning: Define my specific offer, who it's for, and what result it promises. Stage 11 – Hook & Messaging: Write my core hook and story angle. Do NOT rush. Do NOT skip stages. Begin with Stage 1 and say: 'Let's start. Walk me through your background — your experiences, turning points, and what people usually come to you for.'" }
